Many individuals, starting from childhood, are unhappy with the size or shape of their ears. For some, the ears stick out more than they should, are asymmetrical, or hang too low.

Ear reshaping is a type of cosmetic surgery used to address prominent ears. The procedure is also known as otoplasty. Prominent ears can be a feature that runs in families, but this is not always the case. They may occur if there is too much cartilage or if the cartilage ridge at the top of the ear does not fold properly as it develops. They can also result from an ear injury.

Are you a good candidate?

  • Your ear(s) stick out too far from your head
  • Your ears are large in proportion to your head
  • You are dissatisfied with a previous ear surgery

Otoplasty is performed to reshape the ear and is normally done under local anesthesia. Incisions are usually made behind the ears, where skin is removed, and cartilage is reshaped under the skin. Some scoring lines are made on the front side of the cartilage to make it more flexible, followed by sutures at the back to pull it back, reshape the ears, and keep it in place. After achieving good shape and symmetry, bleeding is stopped precisely, and the skin is closed.

Result and Aftercare
A few days after otoplasty, the plastic surgeon will remove your bandages. Your ears will likely be swollen and red. You will need to wear a loose band covering your ears at night for two to six weeks. This will help prevent your ears from being pulled forward when lying down. After bandages are removed, you will notice an immediate change in the appearance of your ears. These changes are permanent.
