A chemical peel for men removes damaged skin cells from the outer layers of the skin. By removing these damaged cells, the skin becomes smoother, stimulates the production of new skin cells, reduces scars and wrinkles, removes spots, and generally gives the skin a more youthful appearance.
There are three types of peels, ranging from mild to strong, treating damaged cells from superficial to deeper levels. The strength and type of each peel are determined by the patient:
- Mild – done in a series of three to six peels
- Medium – done once a year
- Strong – reserved for severe acne that scars and tightens the skin on the lower lids
You will see results as soon as the peeling process is complete! For a medium peel, it may take about seven days. You will continue to see your face improve over the next two to three months.
The sensation felt by patients depends on the type of peel you receive:
- A mild peel is a slight tingling on the skin
- Medium and deep peels produce a slight burning sensation while the peel is applied, but it lasts only a few minutes.
The chemical peel for men is applied with a brush and “painted” onto the skin. Multiple passes are made to achieve the desired depth. At this point, some irritation may be felt, but a small fan will be provided to cool and soothe the skin. An antibiotic ointment will be applied to protect the skin and promote healing.
Side effects vary depending on the strength and depth:
- Pain
- Redness
- Swelling
- Sun sensitivity
In general, avoid direct sunlight in the first few days after the peel and wear sunscreen to protect your healing skin.
